About Us
We are involved in the development, manufacture and sale of a wide range of products for the scientific research and industrial markets. Including: photo-chemistry, physics, protein studies, biochemistry, biophysics, molecular spectroscopy, optical pumping, interferometry, plasma diagnostics, atmospheric studies, materials processing, solid state physics and material science, renewable energy, climate control environments, process control and many more.
Over the years we have continually diversified and developed new and innovative products, winning many international designs, technology and export achievement awards. We excel in providing one-to-one comprehensive customer service and continue to meet the needs of our customers worldwide.
Our History
Founded in 1971 by Professor S. D. Smith OBE FRS, FRSE, FinstP, Edinburgh Instruments Ltd is now one of the world’s largest manufacturers of cutting-edge molecular spectroscopy and gas detection solutions.
We were formed as the from Heriot-Watt University and were the initial private company on Britain’s original University “Research Park”. We are located on the outskirts of Edinburgh across three sites where we employ over 130 people.
We are pioneers of Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC), and in 1978 the company developed a Fluorescence Lifetime Spectrometer system based around the successful nanosecond flashlamp. This product range has culminated in the development of the FLS1000, the latest computer controlled, combined Steady State and Fluorescence Lifetime Spectrometers on the market and the FS5 one of the world’s most sensitive benchtop spectrofluorometers.
In the 1980s we introduced a full range of infrared and far infrared gas lasers (CW and pulsed CO2 and CO lasers and optically pumped TeraHertz lasers) to the market. We now offer a wide range of Lasers and LED’s.
In 2019 we diversified our range and introduced the DS5 UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, as well as the RM5 Raman Microscope.
The DS5 UV-Vis Spectrophotometer is a high-performance dual beam instrument suitable for many analytical applications where accuracy and precision measurements are key to results.
The RM5 Raman Microscope is a compact and fully automated Raman microscope for analytical and research purposes. The truly confocal design of the RM5 is unique to the market and offers uncompromised spectral resolution, spatial resolution, and sensitivity.
In 2021 we continued to grow our product range, with the introduction of the RMS1000 Raman Microscope.
The RMS1000 Raman Microscope is an open architecture research grade confocal Raman microscope. It has been designed so it can be adapted to almost any modern, state-of-the-art Raman application.
Techcomp Group
In 2013, Edinburgh Instruments was acquired by Techcomp Instruments. Techcomp Instruments is a scientific instrument manufacturer based in Hong Kong with a global presence, specialising in three core technologies: Molecular Spectroscopy, Chromatography and Laboratory Products. Their operations date back to the early 1900s.
Techcomp’s European headquarters are located on a modern campus in Livingston close to Edinburgh, Scotland. Techcomp Europe (TEU) comprises a select number of well-respected European scientific instrument manufacturers with a long and rich history of product innovation. They also have a strong global commercial network with offices across the globe providing excellent customer service.
Since acquiring Edinburgh Instruments, Techcomp Instruments have made significant investment in both their manufacturing and research and development facilities. Opening the Techcomp Research and Engineering Centre (TREC) in 2014, which works on exciting product innovation and development across all the brands and in 2019 they expanded their production facilities with the addition of a new purpose built facility.
Techcomp Europe is led by our CEO, Richard Finlayson, who lives in Edinburgh with his young family.
Techcomp are very proud of their European manufacturing heritage and reputation for the delivery of high quality, accurate instrumentation backed by great customer service and support.
As well as Edinburgh Instruments the Group comprises:
SCION Instruments – Experts in Gas Chromatography (GC), HPI Analysers, Single Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), High Performance Liquid Chromatography Instruments (HPLC) and CompassCDS software. The company has operations in The Netherlands, USA, Scotland and China.
Froilabo – Specialists in Ultra Low Temperature Freezers, ovens, incubators, climatic chambers and temperature control products with factories in France and Romania.
